Sideboard “Woodcut in Space” – Dieter Zurnieden

From furniture to three-dimensional graphic.

 The starting point of the work was the piece of furniture itself. I initially viewed it

as a sculpture and engaged with its proportions, its volume,

and its spatial impact.

In the second step, it was conceptually transformed into a surface and a graphic structure.

MDF panels, which I treated like woodcuts with lines, indentations,

and structures, take up the theme "Bees and Nature". The organic

forms of the woodcut merge with the clear geometry of the furniture body.

Thus, a synthesis of sculpture and graphic art was created. A three-dimensional

object becomes a "woodcut in space". The original function of the

piece of furniture is preserved, thereby adding a new visual and haptic

dimension.

 Artistic Position

 "The starting point of my creative process is photographic imagery

and found realities, supplemented by influences from literature, film, and

the virtual world. These "materials" are digitally processed, alienated, reduced, and fragmented until a new visual manifestation of the visible emerges.

At the center is the merging of my sensitive inner world with the perceived outer world. Through shifts in perspective and the opening of new fields of vision, pictorial spaces are created that mediate between reality and transformation, making the familiar tangible in an unusual way."
